#7 | AI Dialogues for Speaking Practice

Hello Language Enthusiasts,

A few months ago, I tried ordering coffee in a foreign language—confident I’d practiced enough.

The barista smiled, tilted her head, and asked something I couldn’t understand.

My rehearsed response vanished.

I mumbled something unintelligible, and we resorted to pointing at the menu.

It felt… awkward.

That’s when I realized again that practicing isolated phrases wasn’t enough.

I needed to experience conversations as they happened—complete with the messy back-and-forth, unpredictable questions, and moments where I’d need to think on my feet.

For real conversations, I prefer face-to-face, but for drill practicing, I use AI.

What you’ll learn in this edition:

  • How AI can simulate real-life conversations that build confidence.
  • A framework for making these sessions as effective as possible.
  • Why fluency is less about perfection and more about persistence.

Let’s explore how to practice language in a way that actually sticks.

The Problem

If you’ve tried practicing conversations, you know the struggle.

Language learning apps can teach vocabulary and grammar, but they rarely help you navigate the unpredictable flow of real dialogue.

You prepare to ask for directions, only to panic when someone answers too quickly or uses native expressions no app has ever taught you.

You want to connect with colleagues at work but stumble because you can’t find the right words fast enough.

Think about automatisms that haven’t kicked in yet.

That’s the gap—knowing the rules but not how to play the game.

Here’s the truth: learning to speak means learning to adapt.

AI gives you a space to do that. It’s not perfect, but it doesn’t need to be.

The Solution: Conversations that feel real

When I started using AI for language practice, I discovered how powerful role-playing could be.

Even though I didn’t like it during in-person classes.

Ok. So, instead of repeating phrases, I could run through entire scenarios.

If I were planning a trip, I’d simulate ordering at a restaurant or checking into a hotel.

Preparing for a meeting? I’d practice workplace conversations.

The best part? AI lets you make mistakes, reflect, and try again without judgment.

Even after the tenth time, haha. But who knows :).

How can you make the most of it?

Step 1: Imagine the conversation you need

Visualize a situation you’re preparing for.

Whether it’s meeting someone new, asking for help, or even cracking a joke, start with the specific details. Keep it simple.

One of my favorite practice sessions was simulating a train station interaction.

I had AI play the ticket agent.

It felt real—questions like, “Which destination?” or “Would you like a round trip?” forced me to think quickly.

And when I stumbled, the AI paused to correct me and suggest better phrasing.

It wasn’t just practice—it was preparation.

Step 2: Learn through feedback

After every session, I’d ask for feedback.

Not just corrections, but explanations.

Why was my phrasing awkward? How could I say it more naturally?

One time, while practicing Spanish, I realized I kept misplacing adjectives.

Instead of a generic correction, AI broke it down:

“You said ‘el grande coche,’ but it should be ‘el coche grande.’ In Spanish, adjectives often follow the noun.”

That clarity? Game-changing.

Step 3: Build vocabulary for real-life use

To make these sessions stick, I focused on context-specific vocabulary.

If I were practicing ordering food, I’d ask AI for related phrases.

But instead of just memorizing them, I’d weave them into conversations:

  • “What’s the difference between ‘quiero’ and ‘quisiera’ when ordering?”
  • “Can you show me how to ask about vegetarian options politely?”

It wasn’t just about learning words but about understanding how to use them naturally.

Your Immersive Language Practice prompt

Alright, let’s get straight to the good stuff.

Here’s your free mega prompt for ChatGPT & Co.

This tool allows you to create immersive and realistic language practice tailored to your specific goals and needs.

Access and copy the prompt in Notion (plus all instructions).

How it helps:

  • Creates realistic, role-specific simulations for real-life practice.
  • Provides detailed feedback to refine your language skills.
  • Makes practice engaging with scenario-based learning.

Copy the prompt and add it to an AI tool like Gemini, ChatGPT, or Claude.

You may need to activate voice and sound or, for some features, have access to a premium plan.

Be specific with your input and replace the [PLACEHOLDERS] with relevant details.

Multiple entries and phrases are possible.

Placeholder Example:

Language: French
Current Skill Level: Beginner in French.
Learning Goals: Confidently order food in a French-speaking restaurant.
Daily Time Commitment: 20 minutes.
Focus Areas: Politeness, pronunciation, and casual phrasing.
Cultural Context: French dining etiquette, casual language, and slang.

Your details help AI simulate scenarios that align with your unique needs and language goals, making the practice feel truly yours.

What’s the output?

A conversation so realistic and tailored, it may feel like practicing with a real person.

A real-life win

Recently, a reader shared their own story:

They’d been practicing French with AI, simulating casual conversations about hobbies.

When they finally spoke to a native speaker, they surprised themselves—they didn’t just understand; they kept the conversation going.

The key? They weren’t aiming for perfection.

They focused on being understood and adapting to the flow of conversation.

That’s the mindset I want you to embrace.

Your turn: the weekly challenge

Here’s how you can start practicing today (simplified prompt):

  1. Pick a Scenario: Think of a specific conversation you want to master.
  2. Run This Prompt: “Pretend you’re a [specific role]. I’ll play the part of a [user role]. Let’s practice a conversation about [specific scenario]. Afterward, summarize my mistakes and suggest improvements.”
  3. Reflect and Repeat: Use feedback to refine your responses and try again.

Remember: There is no need to nail it on the first try. You want to show up, practice, and improve. Step by step. That’s all.

Overcoming challenges

AI is far from perfect, and neither is practice.

But, you can create a smoother process:

  • When AI Feels Too Robotic: Add more details to your prompts. Instead of saying, “Let’s talk,” try, “You’re a friend recommending a movie. Make it casual and fun.”
  • When You’re Overwhelmed: Start small. Practice one scenario a week. Consistency beats intensity every time.
  • When You Feel Stuck: Combine AI practice with other tools—listen to podcasts, watch videos, or even write short journal entries in your target language.

Don’t worry: fluency is built one conversation at a time.

Engagement section

What’s the first scenario you’ll practice this week?

  • Ordering food at a café.
  • Introducing yourself at a meeting.
  • Asking for directions.

Reply to this email and let me know. I’d love to hear about your progress.

Closing thoughts

Language is about words and even more about connection.

The confidence to speak comes from practicing in situations that matter to you.

So start small. Practice often.

And remember—every mistake is just another step toward fluency.

Until next week, keep learning!
