#18 | Love Notes Beat Pricey Chocolates
Valentine’s Day (14th February).
Some people go all in. Roses. Reservations. Maybe even a handwritten poem on parchment paper (probably sealed with wax, because why not).
Others dodge the whole thing. Not their vibe. Too commercial. Feels forced.
Then there’s the middle ground—the ones who don’t mind it but also don’t love the pressure. The “I guess we should do something?” group.
That’s where I am.
I don’t need an official calendar date to remind me to appreciate my wife. But doing nothing? That feels like a missed opportunity.
Love—whether for a partner, a friend, or even your slightly judgmental cat—deserves attention.
Not in some mass-produced, one-size-fits-all way. In a way that actually means something.
For me, that means skipping the overpriced chocolate (still yummy) and predictable dinner reservations (pasta always works) and doing something personal. Something that feels like us.
Every year, we make some sort of card summarizing our relationship over the past year…
…complete with sketches, inside jokes, and at least one badly drawn version of us that somehow resembles IKEA assembly diagrams (usually me).
It’s not fancy. But it’s fun and awesome. And it’s ours.
And honestly? That’s the only thing that really matters.
Because love isn’t only about big, perfect moments (you certainly need a few).
It’s usually about all the small ones—the ones that make up a life together.
Like realizing halfway through building a bookshelf that you’ve both been reading the instructions upside down.
So today, let’s forget the clichés and do something better.
Why writing a love note actually matters
A good love note isn’t a romantic performance. It’s a timestamp. A little reminder that says:
“Hey, I see you. I appreciate you. And despite that one time we nearly lost it over a missing Allen wrench, I still think you’re my favorite person.”
It doesn’t have to be deep. It doesn’t have to be poetic.
It just has to be you.
Some of the best love notes aren’t dramatic confessions. They’re the ones that capture the small, ridiculous, uniquely you moments of a relationship:
- “You always steal my hoodies. I act like I’m mad, but I love that you do.”
- “If we ever do an escape room together, you’re in charge of the clues. I’ll just panic dramatically.”
- “You snore like a malfunctioning Roomba, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Words matter. But they don’t have to be perfect to count.
“But I’m bad at this” – The fear of the blank page
Most people don’t know how to write this stuff.
If you’ve ever sat down to write something meaningful and thought, “What if this sounds ridiculous?” or “What if I say it wrong?”—welcome to being human.
Writing a note for someone you care about feels harder than it should.
That’s because it’s personal. And personal things don’t come with a template.
The good news? They don’t need one.
Because the best notes—the ones people remember—aren’t the ones that sound polished. They’re the ones that sound like you.
But I want to help you out a bit, of course.

Forget the rules. Just say something that matters.
Love doesn’t need the perfect words to be real. Love doesn’t need a big, dramatic gesture to be meaningful. Love doesn’t need a specific day on the calendar to be noticed.
But love does deserve attention.
So whether you write a full letter, a dumb poem, or just a two-line text that makes someone laugh—just do it.
Not because a holiday tells you to. But because it’s nice.
And if you need a little help? You know where to go.
Your turn! Now go write something ridiculously, awkwardly, wonderfully you.
Happy Friday, Mark
